What builders plants are! Woody plant material is formed by a new layer or cells being laid down starting in the spring and continuing throughout the summer. The spring cells are bigger as it’s usually wetter and cooler, while the later summer cells are smaller and closer together. Hence the darker part of the ring. This is how historic climate patterns can be read using tree cores and sections. Some years have thinner rings (dry years) and others wide (wet years), but no matter how tough a year was, they keep building onto themselves year after year. A nice demonstration of persistence through hardship.
